Concert is pleased to announce that its Eyes on the Street public art installation was named the 2018 Public Art winner by a special jury representing all facets of the real estate development industry at this year’s UDI Awards for Excellence gala on November 22, 2018.
Eyes on the Street comprises two mirrored stainless-steel forms in the shape and context of an eye, reinforcing the notion of residents continuously observing their surroundings, and reflecting on their own lives and their community.
“Eyes on the Street is a unique sculpture,” says Brian McCauley, Concert President and CEO. “We are pleased that the UDI has decided to add public art as a new category to the bi-annual awards program. Public art is a critical component of place making and reinforces Concert’s commitment to delivering social vibrancy and joy in our master plan communities.”
The stunning artwork was designed by renowned Vancouver artists Marie Khouri in collaboration with Charlotte Wall, and was inspired by Jane Jacobs “eyes on the street” concept, which refers to people’s ability to observe and connect with others and their environment when urban design is thoughtful, diverse and accessible to maximize what Jacobs coined as natural surveillance.
Eyes on the Street was unveiled in July 2018 during a celebratory neighbourhood Block Party that was attended by more than 300 residents.
